charts from metaqoutes corp

dear traders,
does any of you know which type of charts are provided by metaquotes??
Im thinking that with the different type of brokers out there eg. enc, dealing desk, no dealing desk, stp ect those different types of brokers might show different price action compared with each other.
so are metaquotes charts the true market price action?? where are their charts sourced from?

regards, ellie

All MQ data is indicative date (an average of many sources). It's best to download data from your broker (not by pressing the 'download' button, but by scrolling back the chart...).

Indicative data, like the name implies, is indicative - it's basically an average of many sources (usually the big liquidity providers in the market - banks, etc.). It's only suitable for backtesting long-term experts, that trade large time-frames and do not rely on inner M1-bar movements (tick data).

To get your actual broker's data, use the 'scroll-back' method.

  • Tool > Options > Charts tab > change 'Max bars in history' and 'Max bars in chart' to 9999999999 > OK > Restart MT4.
  • Open a Chart with the required symbol on M1.
  • Un-check autoscroll and zoom out of chart (as much as possible).
  • Repeatedly press 'PgUp'. This will 'force' M1 data to download.
  • After downloading Max available data, use period_converter script (comes with MT4) to produce larger time-frames.
The problem with this method is that most brokers allow 4-12 weeks of M1 data only, so u would have to a collect it for a few months to have enough for anything.

Alternative ways are:
  • Collect ticks with a tick-logger and produce your own M1 files (or maybe even Test directly on the collected Tick-data).
  • Use a broker that allows downloading it's data (most MT4 brokers don't).
  • Find a resource on the net for your broker's data (google is your friend).
